Dr Grant Discusses Brown Period Blood as a Perimenopausal Symptom
Cyclical brown blood may be a symptom of perimenopause.
Dr Jennifer Grant, GP at Beacon HealthCheck, answers your medical questions each week in the Independent.ie. This week Dr Grant was asked if a woman in her mid-forties should be worried about bleeding brown blood the week before her period.
Dr Grant outlines what may be the cause behind this bleeding and recommends the patient visit her GP for further clarification and reassurance. Though brown blood may be due to a retained foreign body, an STD, cervical cancer or polycystic ovarian syndrome, in this case the cyclical nature of the bleeding points towards being a symptom of perimenopause.
Perimenopause is the time when the body makes the transition to menopause and marks the end of the reproductive years. Women can begin perimenopause at different ages.
