Enlarged Prostate Treatment Options with Dr Michel deWildt
Image.ie have been putting readers questions to our experts. A reader is concerned that her husband’s medication for an enlarged prostate seems to be becoming less effective over the last few months. Consultant Urologist, Dr Michel deWildt gives his advice.
Dr deWildt begins by discussing the effect a benign prostate enlargement has on quality of life, as it impacts daily activities and sleep routines. A benign enlargement of the prostate “encircles the peeing tube and can lead to restriction of urinary flow out of the bladder” causing urinary symptoms.
Dr deWildt confirms treatment usually begins with medication, but as the medication becomes less effective a more definitive solution is desired by patients. Traditionally TURP (TransUrethral Resection of the Prostate), was the preferred surgical treatment, however a recent novel surgical approach known as HoLEP (Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate), has more permanent long-term results compared to TURP. There is also a significantly shorter recovery time and minimal side effects after the HoLEP surgery.
The options should be discussed with your GP to determine the treatment method that best works for you.
If you are concerned about any health issues, don’t delay. Visit your GP and get it checked.
