Training:

Prof Leo Stassen has trained in both medicine and dentistry. Prof Stassen graduated from Trinity College Dublin in dentistry in 1977, and in medicine in 1980. He went on to train as an oral and maxillofacial surgeon (OMFS) in leading hospitals in the UK and India.

Professor Stassen is on the Specialist List of the Medical Council of Ireland in oral and maxillofacial surgery (MCN 02270) and the Dental Council list in Oral Surgery.

Experience:

Prof Stassen is currently an oral and maxillofacial surgeon at Beacon Hospital. He also works in Northbrook Clinic, Blackrock Clinic and Hermitage Clinic. Prof Stassen specialises in the diagnosis, investigation and treatment of diseases that affect the mouth, jaw, salivary glands, face and neck.

In 1990, Prof Stassen began work as a Consultant Surgeon. He became a recognised leader in orthognathic, cleft and craniofacial surgery in the UK from 1990 to 2003.

He was appointed Professor and Chair of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Trinity College Dublin based in St James and the Dublin Dental University Hospital (DDUH), in 2003. While in St James and DDUH, he developed the public OMFS, mouth, head and neck service and led a multidisciplinary paramedical OMFS, mouth, head and neck team which looked after over 50% of mouth cancers in Ireland.

Prof Stassen has extensively published in OMFS, presented globally on OMFS and served as Honorary Editor of prestigious publications such as the Journal of the Irish Dental Association (2005–2018) and the British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (1996 -1999).
